Most folks haven’t seen Elliot awake, or at least not very awake. He’s got this funny habit of sleeping when people visit. So, we thought we’d gather some video evidence proving that, yes, Elliot does in fact open his eyes for more than five seconds at a time!

This is about four minutes of video with Elliot doing a whole lot of not much; he’s pretty much just looking around, checking stuff out. You’ll need Quicktime to view it, which you can get free from Apple’s website (even if you use Windows).

The first day Elliot saw himself in the mirror. His face says it all (check out the bigger version). Since then, he loves to see himself in the mirror. He also loves examining the pictures on our living room wall, the (fake) potted plants on one of our shelves, and the books on our living room bookshelf.

Tania's Two Favorite Men

I took this picture a few days ago and I thought I would share it with you all. I just love this picture of my two favorite men: my Husband (love of my life, best friend, confidant, partner in life, my favorite person in the whole world, God’s perfect gift) and my son (my little boy, second love of my life, blessing, joy, God’s perfect gift, and so much more that I have no words for).

Elliot is so very blessed to have such a wonderful daddy (the best daddy ever!). I am so very blessed to have the best husband in the world. I could not have survived these last two weeks without his love, support and strength… as well as all of the baby duties he has taken on. I thank God every day for these two.

Tania

Happy 1 week!

At 2:51 PM yesterday (1/31/08), Elliot turned exactly one week old!

Happy 1st week birthday, Elliot!

He had a frenectomy done today to loosen his “tongue-tied” condition. There really wasn’t any pain; in fact, he nearly slept through the procedure. His nursing is going much better now, thanks to a looser tongue!

A few weeks ago I had a second Baby shower thrown by my good friends in Thousand Oaks.  I had a really great time and everything was beautiful! Thank you Kim, Rebecca and Caitlin for putting this together and making it a special day! I really appreciate you. Also thank you to all of my friends and family that came and shared this special day with me and helped Tobias and I start our new journey with your gifts for Elliot.

Click either of the pics below to see more pictures of both baby showers…enjoy!

Here’s our little son in 3-D! Except, unlike Captain Eo, you don’t need any special (and painful) glasses. We had these taken earlier this month at one of those specialty places, but I’m just now getting around to posting them (sorry!).

These are pretty much the best photos, though we have a ton more and a DVD video recording of the whole session. But the video is pretty choppy, so that part is lame. Our appointment was around dinner-time, which is when Elliot often sleeps, so we were a bit worried he’d be sleeping and therefore not making all the funny faces and acrobatic maneuvers for the camera. And, unfortunately, that’s how it happened. We did get some decent shots of his little face (see below), but that’s about all we got. It looked like he was sleeping during most of the 30-minute visit, curled up in a little ball, and often hiding his face behind his feet. (He’s a flexible little guy!) So, the ultrasound tech, some under-trained 20 year old, had a difficult time getting good shots of Elliot’s face. He likes his sleepy-time. See, they (foolishly) didn’t tell us that it would’ve been best for Tania to drink some cold juice prior to the visit. We know they should’ve told us this because (1) about ten minutes into the session they asked if we had any cold water to help Elliot wake up. Uh, yeah, thanks a boatload for the late advice. And (2), we later read that juice help wakes up the baby (its the natural sugar, I assume) and that other 3-D ultrasound places advise this before you come. Sigh. Anyway, we still got some good photos of little Elliot’s mug, and that’s what mattered to us most.

Grandma’s, grandpa’s, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, hope you enjoy!

Elliot in 3d
This one is my personal favorite. :) Some folks are saying he looks just like his daddy! A chip off the ol’ block! (I must be getting old to have said that…)

Elliot in 3d
It’s hard to tell for sure, but he may be sticking out his tongue in this one… Either that or he’s starting to pucker his lips.

Elliot in 3d
Chubalub!

His Aunt Ingrid has already nicknamed him “Marshmallow Man”. :D

They said he has my chin and my nose… You can see his little chin here. I think he’s got his mom’s nose, at least from the front, and maybe some facial structure.

P.s. My complaints aside, this was so worth it! Depending on the package, it really isn’t all that expensive, either. And we get to keep these captured moments forever! Think about it–for anyone not born in the last few years, those nine months are a part of your life that you never got to see in any detail; they’re basically lost to you. But now we get to show Elliot a little bit of that part of his life, a little bit of what he looked like before he was born. And I think that’s pretty darn cool.

P.p.s. Oh, and If you’re from the school of thought that says, “wait ’til they’re born to know their gender, to name them, etc”, then, well, I don’t understand ya, but I got much love for ya! And I hope you enjoy our journey anyway! :) Unless you’re that one janitor guy at my work who doesn’t take off his latex gloves before he uses the door handle to exit the bathroom after cleaning it. If that’s you, dude, we gotta talk.

(Bigger version here.)

This is our little boy at just over 28 weeks!

At the appointment, the ultrasound tech estimated Elliot at a tad under 3 pounds, which puts him right where he should be. His heartbeat was steady and solid, and he looked cozy, curled up in a ball with his little feet over his head. Enjoy that flexibility while it lasts, little buddy… :)

Yeah, I know, this picture looks a bit like a ghost story from that old Unsolved Mysteries show, but it was the best we could get. The angle of this shot sorta over-emphasizes the bone around his nasal cavity, but the longer we look at it, the more we see what he looks like. Tania says he’s got my chin. I think he’s got little chipmunk cheeks.

Peanut was laying sideways in Tania’s tummy, facing toward her back, away from the camera. Shy guy, maybe. Or maybe just a tired guy, since he and Momma didn’t sleep well the night before. A little grumpy too; when the ultrasound tech was pressing on Tania’s stomach in different places, trying to get a better view of him, he threw a few swift, hard back kicks at her hand. Let sleeping babies lie, I guess. Feisty! Poppa likes. :D

Peanut at over 18 weeks
(Click here for the bigger version, and another new ultrasound.)

The verdict is in, and Peanut is a boy!

(Insert gigantic grin here.)

A few days ago, we went to the appointment where they do the detailed “anatomical survey” ultrasound. They took pictures of and measured my little son (grin) from every angle. Everything looks great so far. Peanut’s already acting like his daddy, too! He had his little right arm draped over his forehead, palm out, while he was laying down (well, it’s not like he can stand!). I do this all the time when I sleep. Tania noticed it right away and pointed it out to me. A chip off the ol’ block already! :)

We’ve uploaded two pictures. There’s a bigger version of the one above, plus another one (with his hand over his head, if you look closely). There’s a couple more we didn’t post, since in those he pretty much looks like a skeleton-faced alien threatening the camera. I’ll have to talk to him about being nicer. :)

Tania wasn’t extremely comfortable during the ultrasound, but she survived all the poking and prodding on her belly. Peanut didn’t much feel like rolling over for the spinal picture, and he didn’t seem to be bothered by the ultrasound technician poking at him to move. Don’t mess with a man when he’s sleeping, I guess.

We’ll try to post some of our thoughts and feeling about this soon, but, for now, all I have time to say is that, for me anyway, everything changed the second I knew he was a boy. It’s not just that I’m excited about having a son, although that’s definitely true, but also that we know Peanut so much more now. Arguably the largest part of our human identity is our gender, so this has just, well, it’s just magnified everything. It’s awesome!

P.s. If you really want to see the other two pictures, email us.

P.p.s. Yes, yes, we’re ironing out his name. Soon, soon.
